Sold: Penobscot Basket

Native American woven basket / painted splint ash / New England / c. 1880s

Antique Northeast Woodlands Indian painted splint ash basket with with potato stamps, probably Penobscot and of Maine origin, c. late 19th century. The basket pops with color, with salmon and yellow-painted bands decorated with abstract stars stamped from an incised potato. The piece is in remarkably good condition for a fragile object of this age and has a great old make-do repair done with twine at one corner of the rim. Rarely does one find New England native-made baskets with such great color and bold stamp-decorated surface.
