Description

Extraordinary hand-painted watercolor folk art patriotic presentation frame. Concentric polychrome borders are anchored in a depiction of Lady Liberty and surmounted with an eagle clutching the American flag. Painstakingly detailed but without an inscription at its center, the piece was likely executed to demonstrate the skillful hand of its painter. Its ornamental style and period frame place the piece in the mid-nineteenth century, and given its potent patriotic symbolism, the piece may have been painted to serve as a design for a Civil War memorial or commemoration.
