Sold: Owl & Skull

Antique pyrography owl and skull panel, c. 1900. From a learned library setting of books and scrolls, the glass-eyed owl standing atop a human skull imparts the ominous motto unfurling below: “The Wise are Silent.” Pyrography is an art form which uses wood burning to create its designs. This panel is especially elaborate, achieving a three-dimensional effect with layered plywood, decorative brass tacks, and the owl’s glass eyes. It bears a stamp on the reverse with the maker’s mark of the Flemish Art Company of Brooklyn, New York, whose name became synonymous with this popular art form in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Condition

Good antique condition, but with some cracks and separation in the plywood and a couple of missing brass tacks. Displays well.
