Sold: Nautical Dictionary

Patterson’s Illustrated Nautical Dictionary / 392 pages / published 1891

Rare illustrated nautical dictionary, published 1891 by Captain Howard Patterson. Brimming with profuse illustrations, the 392 page dictionary not only defines technical nautical jargon but also colloquial slang. Dandyfunk, swankie, mackerel sky, flower of the winds, sun dog, cuckold’s knot: the volume is replete with the colorful and forgotten words of America’s maritime past. The first and last pages include dozens of period advertisements printed on salmon color paper in the front and back of the book, with goods marketed to merchant seamen and wealthy yachtsmen alike.

Condition
