Sold: Memory Planter

Memoryware planter and stand / wood with ceramic and glass fragments / c. 1940s

Colorful memoryware planter and stand covered in a mosaic of pottery and glass shards, c. 1940s. This is certainly the most elaborate memory piece I’ve ever had. Composed of found objects or shards, “memoryware” art has its name because it memorializes otherwise forgotten minutia, some of which may have had important significance to its creator. In two separate parts, this planter and stand are covered with thousands of pieces of broken ceramics and glass, including plates, teacups, and figurines, all inset in putty. Several small applied elements have broken off over the years, but the fragile assemblage is in remarkably good condition considering its delicate surface. A wonderful pieces of American folk art ready to plant your own memories in your home.
