Description
Exceptional memoryware frame, c. third quarter nineteenth century. Memory frames are uncommon to find, and this one is particularly satisfying with its surreal arrangement of random objects. The wooden frame is inset with all manner of the curious and commonplace, from early Native American arrowheads and antique jewelry fragments to beans and walnut shells, arranged in semi-symmetrical design and centered on a painted china doll’s head. These seemingly inconsequential things may have been consequential to their one-time owner — such memory assemblages brought together bits and pieces meaningful to their makers, with some examples created to memorialize the dead. An excellent example of this American folk art tradition.
