Sold: Memory Bottle
Memory bottle / brown glass, mortar, miscellaneous objects / c. 1890s
One of the most grotesque memory objects I’ve had. An old whiskey bottle apparently hides under layers of seemingly random small objects: keys, ornate buttons, sea shells, pins, a large iron spike, and on and on. These inconsequential things may have been consequential for their one-time owner, however, as memory assemblages such as this one typically collected objects significant to their maker. Freighted with unknown meaning, this bottle is a particularly powerful example of this form of folk art.
