Sold: Masonic Stone Book

Miniature carved stone Masonic book / marble / New England / c. mid-19th century

Antique nineteenth century folk art hand-carved stone book emblazoned with the Masonic symbol of the square and compasses. The size of your palm, the impenetrable pages of the stone book with the Masonic emblem carved in relief perhaps symbolized the maker’s commitment to the Masons and keeping its ways secret. Given that the Freemasons were founded by medieval stonemasons, the representation of their order in this American folk art stone carving is more than fitting.
