Sold: Marquetry Parcheesi

Folk art double-sided game board/ inlaid and polychrome wood / c. 1890s

Antique and exceptional marquetry game board, American, c. late 19th century. Handsome old surface and color on the Parcheesi side with great Victorian lettering spelling “Home.” The checkerboard on the reverse also has cribbage around the perimeter. The folk art piece was no doubt made by a gifted woodworker.

Apparently the board was originally hinged and folded down the center flat. For whatever reason, the hinges were removed and the board was refashioned as flat — an old repair, perhaps done a century ago.

An unusual iteration of the classic American folk art game board, ready for play or to hang on the wall.

Condition

Good antique condition with a handsome old patina and aged varnished surface. The wood has been filled where the hinges were once attached.

Measurements

18.5 inches square
