Sold: Marble & Claw Foot Piano Stool
Piano stool with ball & claw feet / wood, cast iron, glass / c. 1890s
Antique Victorian piano stool with extraordinary feet, c. late 19th century. The typical cast iron ball and feet typically have clear glass terminals, but this example has marvelous handmade latticinio German toy shooter marbles instead. Each 1.5 inches in diameter, the rare and colorful glass marbles have evidently been in place for most of the piano stool’s life, showing wear from contact with floor and chips to the glass. It seems likely the original owner used the marbles to replace the standard clear glass — who knows, perhaps one broke and he appropriated the toy marbles from his kid for the purpose. I considered removing just the legs to display as objects, but something about their workaday placement as stool feet gives them their magic. A wonderful make-do and imaginative object.
