Description
Folk art hand-carved white marble trompe l’oeil book. Although uncommon, the stone book is nevertheless a genre in American folk art. Perhaps carved by quarrymen, builders, and gravestone carvers with leftover materials, stone books held personal symbolic significance for their makers, some apparently love tokens in relationships, others memorials for the dead.
This example is incised to recall the adornment of a leather-bound volume, yet its pure form gives it an abstract quality.
