Look Both Ways
Crosswalk poster designs / oil pastel / dated 1951
Four designs for public service posters exhorting pedestrians to “Look Both Ways Before Crossing,” signed Bernice Rubin and dated 1951. This “major art” student must have been a regular theater-goer, for the aesthetics of now-classic film noir movies influence these designs — but the oblique angles and dark shadows which heightened suspense in crime films here create high-stakes drama in crossing the street. Equal parts sophisticated and silly, these posters crack me up.
The miniature poster mockups are each taped to a sheet of cardstock, which would look great framed.
