Log Driving

Framed photograph of log driving / albumen print / c. 1890s

Antique large format photograph of a river carry hundreds of logs through rapids, likely Maine, c. late 19th century. Log driving on rivers was the most common means of transporting timber from forests to saw mills downstream. Taken apparently from a bridge, the image depicts untold numbers of huge felled trees — like matchsticks from this vantage point — all transformed into a roiling fluid by the river’s current. The photograph remains untouched in its original mat and frame.
