Sold: Human Skin Model

Rare and sculptural hand-painted antique plaster medical model of a cross-section of human skin, c. 1910s. At fourteen inches tall, the large model shows magnified epidermal, dermal, and subcutaneous tissues, including a hair follicle and sweat glands. Sculpted and painted by hand in the early 20th century, the model reads as both an accurate representation of human biology and also a bold work of sculpture. The piece could be easily fashioned to be hung on a wall, but was originally designed to sit flat on a table. It bears the maker mark of the Cambridge Botanical Supply Company, which furnished laboratory equipment from Waverley, Massachusetts. With its colors and sinuous forms in high relief, the model meticulously describes a hair follicle while also verging on abstract art.
