Sold: Human Club

Folk art carved wooden bust / walnut / c. late 19th century

Hand-carved by an anonymous artist — possibly an African American — this wooden bust of a black man is sculpted from the knot at the end of a tree limb. The result is unsettling and powerful — the truncated branch extends from the head like a gnarled bone, forming the handle of a human club.

Condition

Very good antique condition with old splits and a small hole on the back of the carving. The piece includes a custom-made wrought iron stand which holds the figure upright.

Measurements

10 inches tall

3.75 inches wide
