Description

Painted folk art cabinet in the form of a double house, c. second quarter of the 19th century. Although the piece possibly began its life as a dollhouse, its plain interior suggest a possible more utilitarian use as a cupboard.

In all likelihood replicating the home of its maker, the miniature building is detailed down to the slats in the shutters and curtains in the windows. Early nails and hand-filed brass latches point to an age predating 1850, while its simple vernacular Greek Revival facade could place it as early as the 1820s.

Whether you use the capacious house cabinet as a freestanding structure or mount it on the wall for storage, the building is a rare (and useful) early example of American folk art furniture.
