Sold: Headless Suitor

Painting of man with flowers / watercolor, paper / c. first quarter 19th century

Description

Early American folk art watercolor of a gentleman carrying a bouquet of flowers. Unfinished, the subject lacks his head, as if the artist was waiting to fill in the visage of an imagined suitor. An unlikely survivor, the piece is beautifully distressed, with fold marks and torn edges. A charming naive watercolor with unintentional poetic dimensions.

Mounted in a period frame with archival backing.
