Sold: Handy Match Safe

Match safe in the form of a hand / patinated pot metal / c. 1870s

Hollow hand with attached ring to hang on a wall — originally designed as a match safe — c. late 19th century. Unusual and surreal form with a lifelike casting in pot metal patinated as bronze. Pre-electricity, matches were constantly needed to light oil lamps, gas fixtures, and stoves, and so wall-mounted, table, and pocket match holders abounded. But, as the manufacturer may have advertised, this model was particularly handy to have in the household.
