Folk art carving of hands / plaster, wood / c. mid-19th century

Description

Clasped hands in relief, c. mid-nineteenth century. Although at first glance they appear to be plaster, I believe they are carved wood with gesso. In American folk art, hands often represented friendship or love tokens, and were a frequent symbol in Odd Fellows fraternal iconography.

 

Condition

Sublime aged patina and wear.
