Golden Memory Jug

Memory jug / stoneware, assemblage / c. late 19th century

Description

Memoryware jug in gold paint, c. third quarter nineteenth century. The jug is a surreal world of tiny objects, all subsumed in multiple layers of gold paint, including porcelain dolls, watch chains, arrowheads, combs, buttons, seashells, a miniature ice pick — the more you find the harder you look. These seemingly inconsequential things may have been consequential to their one-time owner — such memory assemblages brought together bits and pieces meaningful to their makers, with some examples created to memorialize the dead. A good example of this American folk art tradition.
