Sold: Golden Man

Wonderful antique folk art miniature carving of a gentleman in gold paint, c. 1900s. The piece is carved in a singular and striking style, with startlingly angular and sharp features contrasting with strangely smooth, rounded elements — altogether, the abstract and contradictory features make for a masterwork of folk art sculpture reflecting the talent and unique vision of a gifted anonymous artist. The figure’s small stature — just above six inches tall — somehow gives the sculpture greater impact and a larger presence. The piece is painted gold — likely the finest variety of turn-of-the-century radiator paint — and is in an excellent state of preservation for a delicate carving of his age. The piece is truly an exceptional carved folk art figure and in all likelihood was carved by a known hand. Found in Pennsylvania.
