Sold: Gilded Cage

Description

Unusual antique hand-painted glass negative, c. 1920. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It appears to be a photographic negative of a backlit woman and caged bird, which was hand-painted and then backed with gold leaf, giving it a marvelous glimmering effect. The back was then varnished, to prevent flaking. The effect is luminous and surreal.
