Description
Three extraordinary swirl latticinio “toebreaker” art glass marbles in a rare large size, each in hand about the size of a plum, and made in Germany for the American market in the 1880s. Cut from a cane of molten glass, latticinio marbles are spun by hand from strands of colored rods which form a lattice-looking core.
A rare large size at two and a quarter inches in diameter, these spheres of spiraling polychrome glass exerted galactic gravity in kids’ marble matches, in which they dominated gameplay but emerged chipped and broken. These three examples remain in excellent condition, with expected minor flaws from rolling around for a century and a half.
Other monikers for the mammoth marble:
boulder, bonker, cosher, goen, masher, plumper, popper, shooter, thumper, smasher, goom, noogie, taw, bumbo, crock, bumboozer, bowler, tonk, tronk, godfather, tom bowler, fourer, giant, dobber, dobbert, hogger, biggie, toebreaker
Condition
Generally excellent, though imperfect with a few minor chips and scratches.
Measurements
2.25 inches each.
