Description

Discovered in the attic of a New Hampshire homestead and hidden for a century and a half in the interior of a nondescript trunk, this box lid preserves what appears to be a rare 1864 presidential election campaign broadside for Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, its slogan recapitulating lines from Johnson’s published speeches in order to tout the National Union Party ticket. Whether considered in light of its historical moment or out of context as a found object, the piece is a powerful and timeless call to uphold American founding principles.
