Description
This unusual folk art watercolor and calligraphic certificate was likely presented to Asa Upton (1783-1875) of Danvers, Massachusetts upon his admission into the Masons in the spring of 1822. It is emblazoned with various Masonic symbols, including the rising sun, all-seeing eye, compass, and others. With its mysterious imagery, the whimsical piece is a strikingly graphic and colorful example of early nineteenth-century American calligraphy.
Condition
Very good antique condition, as found. The fragment was framed likely in 1930s or ’40s and I have not removed the piece from its frame. It appears the piece was adhered to the mat board, but the paper remains in good condition, untouched since it was framed many decades ago.
