Description
Folk art memoryware frame representing a marriage, c. 1930s. This unusual memory assemblage is clearly not composed of random objects, but those of symbolic importance to its maker. Charm bracelet wedding rings, military badges, utensils, fishing lures, seashells, china fragments, necklaces, subway tokens, keys, a heart-shaped padlock, a policeman’s button: united in one mass by a thick layer of gold radiator paint, they all seem to tell a story. The only unpainted object is the couple’s porcelain cake topper, which stands in the assemblage as if ankle-deep in the surf of their shared experiences.
The frame was found empty, but in all likelihood held a photo of the unknown couple, who are memorialized here better than any photograph could capture.
