Sold: Folk Art Wooden Jacks

Toy jacks / carved & painted wood / c. 1900

Complete set of ten hand-carved and painted toy jacks, c. 1900. Typically made of metal, these jacks are made of wood, and clearly the product of skillful woodworker. Lightweight and delicate (though apparently hardy enough to stand the test of time), these six-pronged figures comprise the pieces of the classic children’s game of Jacks.

The Rules of Jacks

With a small ball in hand, the jacks are strewn on the floor, upon which player tosses the ball into the air and then tries with one hand to pick up the jacks and catch the ball, usually before it bounces. If the player fails in this, the turn passes to the next player. The game becomes increasingly difficult; first, one jack has to be picked up, then two at a time, next three, and, finally, all must be grasped in the hand before the ball is caught.

The wooden set here is not only unusual for its material, but also for its beautiful form and colorful patina. At one inch in diameter, each of the jacks is a miniature sculpture, and together as a set, the collection is a delightful example of American folk art and handicraft.
