Folding candlestick  / brass / c. mid-19th century

Rare antique folding brass candlestick designed for stagecoach travel, c. second quarter 19th century. An inventive and strikingly modern design, the candle holder has a jointed post allowing adjustment to height and angle of light while the three-legged base has hinged sections which fold onto one another for travel. When completely collapsed, the piece not only lies flat, but the circular pierced section at the center is notched, allowing the piece to hang discretely on the wall or secured in luggage. Nearly two centuries old, the travel candlestick is one the most beautifully wrought and elegant inventions I’ve ever come upon.
