Ear trumpet / gutta percha and woven horsehair / c. 1870s

 

With its use of the innovative early plastic gutta percha, this Victorian hearing aid represented the latest in technological advancement. The hearing-impaired would hold the small end to his or her ear while the speaker would use the mouthpiece to communicate through the woven horsehair tube. A strangely beautiful sculptural object and a remarkable survivor in excellent condition.
