Description
This mid-nineteenth century folk art cut paper silhouette is unusual in that it includes a structure, almost certainly representing a schoolhouse, with the American flag flying overhead. The imposing silhouette of an older woman floats above, likely representing the schoolmistress. Tiny in comparison to the cut profile of the teacher, the schoolhouse is surmounted by the shadow of its master, who looms in the sky above like a black cloud.
