Sold: Chatham Blanket

Blanket box  / printed cardboard / c. 1930s

Vintage paperboard box advertising the “Chatham Blanket” c. 1930s. Perhaps the sexiest product packaging ever designed. With her seductive “come hither” gaze verging on indecency, the bedded blond beckons the customer to join her under the Chatham Blanket, transforming a mundane object into an aspirational sexual fantasy. At near lifesize proportions, her borderless photograph is printed with such verisimilitude that one might expect to find her inside the cardboard box upon purchase. Sex appeal has long been the most incendiary technique designed to inflame capitalist-driven consumption in America, but rarely is its power through advertising felt in such a stark and — ahem — naked manner.

A custom-made plexiglass case fitted to a black museum base protects the fragile box and elevates an artifact intended for ephemeral consumption into enduring art.

Condition

Very good antique condition with minor wear to box. The plexiglass case is in excellent condition.
