Sold: Cast Iron Top Hat

Top hat spittoon / cast iron / c. 1870s

Antique Victorian cast iron trompe l’oeil spittoon, c. late 19th century. Placed on the floor in a billiards hall or saloon, the top hat provided an ironic receptacle for chewing tobacco (and likely also served as a means to rebel against Victorian sartorial decorum). The lifesize iron top hat would be fun to repurpose as a fanciful planter.
