Antique folk art oil on canvas painting of a flowering cactus, signed E.C.E. Simonds and dated 1880. The naive technique gives the plant a flat, abstract form, which is heightened by the intricate angular design of its gilded and ebonised Aesthetic Movement frame. Together, the painting and the frame have a surreal and startlingly contemporary presence.
