Description

Exquisite miniature pencil drawing and watercolor portrait of a gentleman holding a book, c. 1820s or ’30s. At less than five inches tall, the portrait is extraordinarily detailed, down the gentleman’s ring and ruby stickpin. The addition of the surreal, cloud-like scarlet drape fits the traditional format of American folk art portraiture in the early nineteenth century. Although by an unidentified hand, the painter was an exemplary artist.

The portrait is mounted in a daguerreotype frame under glass (with hanging loop soldered above). The original faded photograph is now on the reverse. The unusual make-do frame suits the subject well and appears to be an early placement.
