Sold: Bellamy Odd Fellows Clock

Independent Order of Odd Fellows fraternal shelf clock / walnut, brass / John Haley Bellamy (1836-1914) / Works by E. N. Welch Clock Company, Forrestville, Connecticut / c. 1870 / Ex collection of Nathaniel Figures, Dover, New Hampshire

At the time John Haley Bellamy carved this clock, he was the successful owner of J.H. Bellamy & Co. in Charlestown, Massachusetts, selling themed clock cases for groups such as the Knights of Columbus, the Freemasons, the Grand Army of the Republic, and in this rare example, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Bellamy’s hand-carved clock case features numerous Odd Fellows symbols, including the three-link chain (signifying Friendship, Love and Truth), beehive (signifying industry), scale (signifying justice), and hourglass (signifying fleeting of time). Crowning the clock is the heart in hand, which represents “cheerful giving” and benevolence to those in need.

With its Odd Fellows subject, the clock is a rare example and among only a handful in existence. The works have been serviced by a professional clockmaker and the clock is in good working order with key included.

An extraordinary and rare example of Bellamy’s work, the shelf clock captures his unique artistic vision through the fraternal iconography which defined nineteenth century folk art woodcarving.

Condition

Good antique condition with a handsome aged patina. The clock case has several minor age-related splits as the wood dried and contracted over the years and a few minor chips. Perhaps in service at an Odd Fellows lodge, the clock kept time for many years, its original paper clock face showing evidence of countless windings and adjustment of hands.
