Description
Folk art painted wood insignia of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, hand-carved in relief, c. mid-nineteenth century. The order was founded in 1853 as a fraternal and political secret society in Philadelphia open to mechanics (another word for “artisan” at the time). Though extinct today, the fraternal organization boasted 200,000 at its height in 1900. Functioning as a stand with a hinged iron leg at the back, the compass and arm would have been displayed during fraternal gatherings and ceremonies. An iconic example of American folk art carving and fraternal art.
