Americanism

Found Object Gallery | Old as Adam

An archaeology of the American id, the collection takes its name from a painted aluminum parade banner from the 1950s. Wielded by the McCarthy-era Right, the word “Americanism” drove a wedge between “true” Americans and those deemed un-American.

As a political concept, Americanism divides what unites us. As a collection, “Americanism” unites what divides us. Competing, discarded, celebrated, condemned, forgotten: American identities reveal themselves in objects dating from the War of Independence to Vietnam.
