Sold: Fist of Fire

Antique brass match safe in the shape of a hand, c. mid-19th century. The figural vesta (pocket match holder) opens at the cuff to reveal matches, the lid crosshatched as a strike plate. At just over two inches tall, the details of the fingers and ruffled shirt sleeve are remarkably fine. The raised fist has come to represent resistance and revolution, and in keeping with the metaphor, this fist is ready to start a fire.
