Folk art paint decorated pine box owned by a circus magician, Pennsylvania, c. late 19th century. The bold and whimsical painted designs are in the classic circus colors of gold and red. The compact-sized wooden chest stored props but was likely used as a showpiece in the acts as well (the circus and regional provenance was told to me by the previous owner). The piece has wear demonstrating many years of travel and an aged surface, especially apparent on the front of the box where sap from a knot in the wood gradually interrupted the painted patterns over the decades. A rare and wonderful show-worthy painted box with a colorful backstory.
Very good antique condition, with some wear to paint and scratches, and darkened area from knot as the wood aged.
