Discoveres at Old as Adam, September ’16

Dear Friend of Old as Adam,

Summer has already flown by, and I’ve hardly had a moment to share all of the splendid things that have come and gone during the busy season. But finally, after several unconscionably hot months, tweed weather is upon us. I’m just back from Brimfield with many new finds and have stocked the store for autumn.

New acquisitions include a collection of antique folk art carved stone books, an orchestra’s dance placards c. 1870s, several antique globes, a rare 1920s milk glass electrified vanity mirror, an Art Deco black glass and sterling silver tropical fish hood ornament c. 1920s, an exquisite early 20th century hand-blown perfume bottle in the shape of a woman, a rare 1930s Art Deco male hat advertising figure, an Indian folk art weathervane, a remarkable wrench-driven copper and brass cocktail shaker, a WWII-era carrier pigeon carrier, a collection of WWII Portsmouth Naval Shipyard memorabilia, a variety of antique signs, a hand-carved walnut owl shelf clock c. 1900, an exceptional Victorian tramp art mirror, a selection of restored antique typewriters, a handsome Victorian 1890s desk ready for such a typewriter, and much more.

In the Menswear Department, the fall collection is on the racks, with new finds including fine 1940s-’60s Harris Tweed jackets, an variety of 1920s-’50s letter sweaters (including a 1940s UNH), a selection of lightweight 1950s and ’60s outerwear, many fun vests c. 1880s-1960s, Pendleton and other wool shirts, a couple spiffy 1950s smoking jackets, 1910s-’20s collarless shirts, 1880s-1960s hats including fedoras, bowlers, and toppers, 1930s-’60s neckties, ascots and silk scarves, eclectic cuff links and tie bars, men’s eyeglasses frames 1820s-1960s, and much more.

Discoveries at Old as Adam, June ’16

Dear Friend of Old as Adam,

It’s hard to believe, but the Fourth of July is already just around the corner. Visit the Portsmouth, New Hampshire store this holiday weekend to see the many new finds I’ve gathered as summer gets underway in New England. Read on to learn about the latest acquisitions and upcoming events.

New acquisitions include an 1880s butcher’s trade sign, a Victorian locksmith’s trade sign, an antique silk Masonic apron and other fraternal objects, original hand-painted tennis-themed 1940s necktie designs, a 19th century architect’s model, a late 19th century copper horse weathervane, several antique spyglasses, a handmade guillotine cigar cutter, an exceptional hourglass, an 1890s mechanical horse racing game, vintage cocktail paraphernalia, several folk art carvings, a 1930s life ring from the yacht “Memories” of Boston, sculptural nautical fragments brought up from the sea floor, antique books, several clocks, exceptional photography, and much, much more.

In the Menswear Department, the summer collection is on the racks and going fast, with new finds including 1960s madras sport jackets, linen jackets from the 1930s-1950s, new old stock cotton 1950s shirts, cotton summer bow and straight ties, several fancy vests c. 1890s, 1920s collarless cotton shirts, a few great cowichan sweaters featuring nautical and golf designs, summer hats including a variety of 1920s-50s straw boaters, accessories including fun cuff links, tie bars and money clips, several choice 19th century straight razors, a collection of pocket compasses, 1910s-1960s vintage men’s eyeglasses frames, and much more.

Find Old as Adam at the Brimfield, MA antiques markets this July at Heart of the Mart on Wednesday, July 13. I will be selling antiques in the “E Tent” at the left corner at the far back of the field. My booth will be stocked with many new finds not seen here.

Also, tickets are now on sale for the annual Gatsby on the Isles island jazz age party off of the New Hampshire seacoast. Discoveries at Old as Adam, April ’16

After collecting goods all winter long, it’s finally spring in Portsmouth and Old as Adam comes out of hibernation with a new batch of remarkable finds, quirky antiques and dapper duds. Take a stroll past the tugboats and see the spring collection.

New acquisitions include a 19th century Ottoman porcelain hookah, a rare original late 19th century map of Central Park over six feet long, a folk art sailor whirligig and other nautical finds, several handsome cast iron and wire book stands, a large 1920s carnival coin toss table top, hand-painted wooden signs (including the 1920s cottage name “Camp E-Ta-Lot”), a perfect 1920s nickel plated shaving mirror, a 19th century bust of Charles Dickens among others, a large selection of turn of the century European travel guides with beautiful maps, a collection of antique keys, antique pen and pocket knives, framed full color Victorian house plans, a variety of antique toys, 1930s and ’40s cocktail paraphernalia (including a rare watering can shaker), an exceptional Deco-inspired steamer trunk, and much more.

In the Menswear Department, the store clothing racks have entirely fresh merchandise, with new finds including a variety of vests c. 1910s-1950s, many exceptional neckties and bow ties with names including Liberty of London and Sulka, cotton and wool 1950s and ’60s shirts, several Norfolk jackets, an excellent selection of Harris Tweeds c. 1940s-’60s, fine silk ascots, a Saks sporting jacket c. 1970 with exceptional details, 1950s Navy pea coats, many unusual cuff links, several wrist and pocket watches, vintage straight and safety razors, a few pairs of fine 1920s wire rim eyeglasses, and more.

Press midnight blue velvet smoker (size 40), overcoats including cashmere, tweed, and Chesterfield styles c. 1920s-1950s, hunting jackets, a 1950s Portsmouth athletic sweater (size small), a mistletoe-green wide wale corduroy suit c. 1970 (size 44), 1940s-50s ski sweaters, vintage bow ties, several fine fedoras c. 1920s-50s, fantastic late ’60s patchwork velvet trousers (waist 32), many cuff links and tie bars, and more.
Old as Adam will be open extended hours for the holidays: Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and evenings for all your last minute gifting needs. Gift certificates are always available, and can be delivered via email, post or picked up in the shop at your convenience.
